Australia’s junior men’s world cup team has set up a quarter final showdown with the Netherlands after winning each of its group stage matches in India.

The Burras side coached by Ben Bishop defeated Korea 5-0 in its final group stage match to top the standings, following earlier wins over Argentina (2-1) and Austria (4-2).

The quarter final which will be played at 6.15pm Perth time on Thursday, will pit Australia against another of world hockey’s traditional powers, with the Dutch outfit finishing second in their group following a surprise defeat to Belgium in the group stage.

The Burras squad contains two Western Australians, with Matthew Bird and Frazer Gerrard both registering goals for their country over the course of the group stage matches.

Following his side’s win over Korea, coach Bishop said the group had performed well and would look forward to the challenge posed by the Netherlands.

“Another pleasing performance by the group under warmer conditions than we have had here previously.

“Defensively we were really solid which was the platform for our attacking game,” Bishop said. “The group is in a good space moving into the quarter finals, a challenge we are very much looking forward to.”
