The Burras have romped to a dominant 9-1 win over New Zealand at the Sultan of Johor Cup in Malaysia.

Despite trailing to an early Sam Lane penalty corner strike, the Australians asserted dominance thereafter, recording a heavy win over its nearest geographical rival with a clinical performance.

Max Hendry scored his first of two goals on 20 minutes to equalise, before Blake Govers and Ryan Proctor established a 3-1 lead for the Burras at the half-time break.

The Australians tore through the New Zealand outfit in the second half to register six unanswered goals for a 9-1 win that left coach Ben Bishop satisfied.

“It was very pleasing to have a big win. The first half was challenging but the second was really good for us.

“We need to keep this momentum going into the match against Pakistan on Friday. They have been good and we’ll need to be at our best again.”

The Sultan of Johor Cup forms an important part of the Burras’ preparations for the Junior Hockey World Cup in India in December.

The Burras squad includes WA athletes Matt Bird and Frazer Gerrard, both of whom were on the scoresheet v New Zealand.

Australia next play Pakistan on Friday, November 4.
