Cam Meyer has a new medal to join his collection

Western Australian Institute of Sport cyclist Cameron Meyer (WAIS-AIS) was tonight awarded the Sir Hubert ‘Oppy’ Opperman medal when he was named the Jayco 2010 Australian Cyclist of the Year at a gala ceremony at the Sofitel Melbourne on Collins.

In 2010 it seemed whenever Meyer got on a track bike he claimed a gold medal. At the World Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark in March he blitzed the points race to finish with more than double the points of the silver medallist. He then notched up as second gold medal when he joined his compatriots in the final of the teams pursuit. His third win of the Championships was in the Madison when he teamed with Leigh Howard to upgrade from their 2009 silver medal performance.

At the Commonwealth Games Meyer scored another hat trick this time through wins in the points race and scratch race before he saddled up as a member of the fastest ever Australian teams pursuit squad.

But Meyer, who rides on the road with ProTour team Garmin-Transitions, also performed on the road in 2010 beginning his season with victory in the elite men’s time trial at the Australian Open Road Championships.

The other major award of the evening went to Tasmanian, Richie Porte, who was named the 2010 Scody People’s Choice Cyclist of the Year after receiving the highest number of votes in the public ballot.
