The foundations are literally being laid for Western Australian sporting success at Rio and beyond, with the pouring of the main slab for the new $33.7million WAIS High Performance Service Centre at Mount Claremont this week.

Elite WAIS athletes Alana Nicholls (Kayaking), Brock Ingram (Para-canoe) and Teju Williamson (Diving) joined the Sport and Recreation Minister Terry Waldron and WAIS Chairman Grant Boyce to tour the construction site for what will become the new home of WAIS.

With construction under way, Mr Waldron indicated it was an exciting time for WA high performance sport leading to the Rio 2016 Games and beyond.

“Laying the slab is an exciting construction milestone – the project is gathering pace,” Mr Waldron said.

“We remain on target to have our athletes moving into the centre early next year, just as their training for Rio 2016 enters a critical phase.”

WAIS Chairman Grant Boyce said the new facility would be a leader in its field.

“It’s probably one of the best facilities in the world, given the amount of information and input we’ve had to build it,” Mr Boyce said.

WAIS Olympian and recent dual national championship winner Alana Nicholls said she was eagerly awaiting the opportunity to benefit from the state of the art facility.

“I’m really looking forward to getting into the new facility and being able to use the new recovery centre, I’m just really excited about it,” Miss Nicholls said

The high performance centre features unrivalled training facilities in Australia and the latest technology in sports science and recovery, including state-of-the-art testing facilities, hydrotherapy and recovery pools, physiological laboratories and an indoor runway.
