Poetry in motion: Australia's Naazmi Johnston

Naazmi Johnston, WAIS athlete Janine Murray and Danielle Prince have claimed an historic gold medal in the team competition at the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games.

The Australian team finished the team competition with a combined score from 10 routines of (235.775), a clear ten points ahead of their nearest competitors Canada (224.325), with the team from England taking the bronze (220.475).

Johnston was part of the Australian team that took bronze in the team event in 2006, with the previous best team performance being a silver medal in 1994. The team gold in Delhi sees Australian rhythmic gymnastics reach a new high.

The three girls combined to put together a great display of apparatus control and dexterity that could not be matched by other teams.

The team competition also doubled as qualification for both the all-around and apparatus finals. All three Australian team members have qualified for the all-around final this evening, with Johnston a strong chance of medalling, qualifying in second place behind Cypriote Chrystalleni Trikomiti.

In a massive boost for her confidence ahead of the finals, Johnston also qualified for all four apparatus finals and will be joined by Murray who will also contest the ball, ribbon and hoop apparatus finals on Thursday evening.
