Meyer in action

Western Australian cyclist Cameron Meyer has produced a fine performance, finishing fourth in the points race in last night’s race from the Laoshan Velodrome, Beijing.

Meyer won two sprints in the marathon of endurance, speed and tactics and ended up with 36 points. 39 year old Spaniard Joan Llaneras added the Beijing gold to his victory in Sydney in 2000 after twice lapping the field in accumulating 60 points. German Roger Kluge claimed silver with 58 points and Great Britain’s Chris Newton was third with 56 points.

Meyer figured in five of the interval sprints where riders share points on a 5-3-2-1 basis. The Perth 20 year-old at one stage went into second place after lapping his opponents half way through the 40km event.

Sharing the pace setting with Kluge, Dane Daniel Kreutzfeldt and Japan’s Makoto Iljima, Meyer lived up to his huge reputation and proved that he would be a big chance for medals in the future.

Meyer has already won three junior world titles and has been successful in tour rides in 2008 and was mobbed by his support staff after the race. The race will likely earn Meyer more than just reputation, he will now be firmly underlined n many of the European professional teams as Meyer pushes on towards London in 2012, where medals are a good prospect.
