WAIS equestrian athlete Clayton Fredericks and his mount Dunge’s Laurent Rosé (Rosie) have won the last FEI eventing World Cup leg at Haras Du Pin, France with a score of 50.7 after a thrill-packed competition that saw Fredericks finish the showjumping with just one stirrup.

Fredericks, whilst competing in the showjumping event struck a fence which caused one of his stirrups to break, but he and Rosie managed to complete the rotation and limit their losses.

Fredericks had been leading on Be My Guest (Lottie) but the performances were reversed after incurring four faults in the showjumping, with Lottie finishing fourth in the competition on 59.3. Fellow Aussie Christopher Burton took second and third place. Only one rider, Karim Laghouag of France, managed a clear round.

Rosie, owned by Tim and Alice Page, is a 12-year-old home- bred mare whose grandmother was an Irish x Connemara hunter. She has been with Clayton since she was a five year old. Previous great form included being well placed in the Le Lion D’Angers seven year old Championships, Novice Championships at Gatcombe and being 10th at Blenheim CCI*** as an eight year old.

Tim and Alice Page said after the event that they were proud of Rosie and Clayton, winning in such style in a tough class – even more considering the broken stirrup incident after fence six of the show jumping.

Fredericks claimed the course was a pleasure to compete on and was happy to end the season with a win.

“It’s really good to win here,” he said. “I really want to congratulate all the organising committee for all the work which has been done here, on the ground and the course.”
