WA para-triathlete Brant Garvey has taken another significant step in his journey to qualify for next year’s Rio Paralympic Games after winning an ITU World Para-triathlon event last weekend on the Sunshine Coast.

The WAIS scholarship holder crossed the line first in the PT2 class to win in a time of 1:16.28 over fellow Australian Glen Jarvis (1:19.45).

The win was Garvey’s second for 2015 and provides him with qualification points which are accrued and determine which athletes are eligible for Paralympic selection, whilst the result also confirmed the West Australian with a spot at this year’s World Championships.

Garvey took to Instagram post race to tell fans, “One step closer on my #RoadtoRio ! 300 points in the bank and qualified for the World Championships this September in Chicago. Took the win with over a 3 minute lead,” it read in part.

Another competing WAIS athlete in Sally Pilbeam – contesting the PT3 class – finished second (1:28.03) in her event to Australia’s Kerryn Harvey (1:26.17).

Triathlon Australia’s Paratriathlon Manager Kathryn Periac said she was delighted with the results across the board, with Australian athletes winning nine of the 10 classifications raced.

“We have a couple of sayings in the group – ‘control what you can control’ and ‘put all the cards on the table,” she said.

“And today they put their cards on the table from those athletes who have only been with us for 12 months and some a lot less, to our experienced athletes.”
