Western Australian swimmer Sally Hunter has won a silver medal in the final of the women’s 200m breaststroke at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

In her pet event, Hunter touched home second in the final at the Tollcross International Swimming Complex behind Australian teammate Taylor McKeown to win her first medal of the 2014 Games.

Hunter made a measured start to the final, reaching the first turn in third place, before moving into second position and holding on for silver in a time of 2:23.33, just shy of a second back from McKeown’s winning time of 2:22.36.

The bronze medal was won by English swimmer Molly Renshaw, who at 18 has a bright future in the sport.

Hunter will compete in a third event – the women’s 100m breaststroke – with heats from 7.07pm tonight.

In the men’s 100m freestyle, WA’s Tommaso D’Orsogna has qualified for the final of what is shaping as the most eagerly awaited race of the swimming program.

With dashers, James Magnussen and Cameron McEvoy both advancing, D’Orsogna is the third ranked Australia, earning qualification for the two lap final in lane three, after clocking 49.05 in the semi finals.

The three Australians were the fastest qualifiers for the final, with Magnussen the quickest, timing 48.21 to be considered the gold medal favourite for the race, scheduled for a 2.14am start on July 28 Perth time.
