Perth Glory missed an opportunity to consolidate its position at the top the W-League ladder on Wednesday evening after suffering a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Canberra, only the Glory’s second loss of the season.

Canberra United returned to winning ways with a much-needed 2-1 win over Perth Glory in a rearranged Round 5 fixture in the nation’s capital.

A high quality contest saw both teams create numerous goal scoring openings, but it was Canberra’s new American import Nikki Washington who scored the winner eight minutes after the half-time interval.

A lively opening to the first half saw Canberra’s Caitlin Munoz slot home a penalty after just five minutes, only for Glory’s Rosie Sutton to equalise just four minutes later.

The chances continued at both ends with the Glory’s WAIS scholarship pair of Kate Gill and Collette McCallum both hitting the frame of the goal before the break.

After two consecutive losses the win moves Canberra back into finals contention, with United now sitting a point off fourth-placed Melbourne Victory, while Perth missed the opportunity to move five points clear at the top.
