Western Australian triathlete Jaz Hedgeland has claimed victory at the weekend Gamagori Triathlon Asian Cup in Japan.

One of Australia’s brightest emerging talents, Hedgeland saw off a challenge from Yuko Takahashi to win by seven seconds and add another impressive result to her bourgeoning career.

Hedgeland who celebrated her 21st birthday earlier this month, clocked 1:58.30hrs for victory, after a strong opening swim placed her well in contention in the lead bunch.

The Gold Coast based athlete swam 19.09 to keep pace with Takahashi and by the end of the cycle leg, was in prime position to strike.

A swift closing run of 34.52, which was fastest of all competitors, saw her overhaul her Japanese rival and run clear to victory, with Takahashi crossing in 1:58.37, ahead of compatriot Mariko Adachi (2:00.34) in third.

In a successful campaign for the Australian team, Declan Wilson claimed the elite men’s title win, making it a clean sweep for the touring Aussies.
