Hockeyroos announce intentions with dominant win over China

The Hockeyroos are looking like the team of the glory years from 1988-2000 winning their second game in a row to sit comfortably at the top of pool B.

Unable to convert two penalty corners in the opening three minutes was not a sign of things to come, as the goals came quickly in the second and third quarters to claim a 6-0 win. The strength of the reborn Hockeyroos was too much for the Chinese team.

The win equalled Australia’s biggest win in Olympic history from the successful 1996 Atlanta Games where they beat Argentina 7-1.

Head Coach Katrina Powell was pleased with the performance. “I didn’t see that (result) coming. I asked them to build on yesterday’s performance (against Spain) which they probably eclipsed.

“I was really pleased, not just with how we went about it and the way we moved the ball, but also the work we had done with our fitness, we were able to overrun them.

“It got to the point where it looked a bit easy because we overran them, but it never starts that way. It might end that way, which it did. This a good result for our goal difference.”

The Hockeyroos will be back in action on Wednesday when they take on host nation Japan at 5:30PM Perth time.
