Hockeyroos Defeated in Tournament Decider

The Hockeyroos have missed out on the International Hockey Open title in Darwin after falling to a 2-0 defeat against New Zealand in the final.

WAIS scholarship athlete Kathryn Slattery celebrated her 50th cap for the Hockeyroos, but it was the Blacksticks that would enjoy the spoils of victory, converting two goals during a busy second quarter effort to earn a hard fought win.

Following a cagey first term, the visitors set up their win in the second quarter by virtue of a Kelsey Smith field goal and an Olivia Merry penalty corner.

The Australians battled for a foothold in the second half, but couldn’t penetrate the New Zealand defence, despite concerted third quarter pressure.

Hockeyroos coach Adam Commens lamented his side’s inability to convert opportunities in attack and said it ultimately cost his side.

“It’s disappointing to lose a final against New Zealand, we know they’re a good quality opponent and you need to take your chances,” he said.

“We had a lot of chances in the third quarter and it’s unfortunate that we didn’t score; that’s why tonight they got the result.”

Japan defeated India to take away the bronze medal from the tournament.

The Hockeyroos next head to London to compete in the Champions Trophy from 18 – 26 June.
