The Hockeyroos Olympic medal charge was stopped an unheralded India in the biggest upset in the women’s hockey in Tokyo.

Australia was undefeated after five preliminary matches, and conceded just one goal in a sign of their dominance. This came unstuck with the world number two team knocked out of the Games in a 1-0 loss to India

After finishing top of their pool, Australia were rewarded with a quarterfinal against India who barely scraped in to the finals finishing fouth.

The Hockeyroos dominated possession throughout the match, including 14 shots on goal but were unable to convert.

“Totally gutted. India are obviously a very good team, very skilful, very fast and were ready for us today,” said Hockeyroos Head Coach Katrina Powell.

“I felt like we were ready to go, ready to play… it just wasn’t our day.

“Wins can mask sometimes what is going on, but we created a lot of opportunities today, so we do only have ourselves to blame.

“The future of the Hockeyroos is very exciting. The resilience the athletes have shown to get to this point, the way they played, the way they have showed up is a credit to them.”
