Home stretch! Day 13 in London

Published On: 9 August 2012

Only a couple days left and it’s great to see more Yellow and Green tracksuits up on that podium across a variety of sports.

A lot of people ask me “why do Athletes bite their medal?” Well I’ll answer that question for everyone else that’s wondering why. The tradition originally came from this idea that the gold medal is coated in real gold so the bite was suppose to leave their teeth marks in it.

Overtime, Silver and Bronze winners started to copy. And now it’s at a point where it’s because the photographers and media ask them do to it. Most athletes don’t know these days that it’s a tradition with the Gold medal. They just do it because the media asks them to do it as a pose, and they are in such a state of happiness, that they will just do what they say.

Now back to our West Aussies, whom are aiming to bite that Gold medal. WAIS’s BMX representative, Lauren Reynolds qualified ninth yesterday, to get her through to the nest phase of racing. That will take place on Friday.

Steve Hooker also qualified into the finals with a final jump of 5.50m. Those finals will take place on Friday and I have no doubt that the whole of Australia will be keeping their eye out for Hooker. He is first up on the start list.

Our WAIS sailing duo had a great race 10 ending up first, which boosted their overall standing to sixth. Their final day is on Friday.

And now for the ‘look outs’ for day 13.

WAIS athlete Janine Murray will be making her Olympic debut in the women’s Rhythmic Gymnastics competition. She will compete in the Ball and Hoop events on day one, which I’m sure she’s been anxious to get started. It’ must be tough competing at the end of the games. You would be in the Village just watching athletes bring home medals and be done and celebrating. But I’m sure Janine is more than prepared and really excited to give it her all today!

Our Stingers are in the Bronze Medal game against Hungary. It’s been a long Olympic journey for these girls and we will be watching and wishing them the best in their head-to-head for Bronze.

The Men’s hockey team will face off in the semi-finals against Germany. This Aussie team is so strong and one of the favourites in this Olympics, so keep an eye out for their game.
