Hopes Continue for WAIS on Day 14 in London

Only a couple days left to these Olympic games before we get into the Paralympics. I’m in Oregon, USA right now and I have to say it’s really cool to hear Americans talk about some of our Aussies.

I think it’s fair to say that the US is very competitive and dominant in many sports, so it makes me proud to be Australian when they are complimenting us on events that they typically dominate. Lately they have all been talking about Sally and her Gold in the 100m hurdles. Another name on their tongues is our very own West Aussie Steve Hooker, who will jump today in the pole-vaulting finals.

Exciting news, our Stingers won the Bronze against their rivals Hungary. A true nail biting game where Hungary got a sneak attack in with two seconds left on the clock to tie with the Aussies. A close game but our women managed to stay on top, led by top scorer and WAIS’s very own Gemma Beadsworth.

Beadsworth scored four goals, two in over-time, Gemma was the top player of the game. She was un-fazed in any pressure moments throughout the game. My opinion was that the Aussies weren’t done with their Olympic playing time… they just wanted to play a little longer hence their carry over into over-time.

The men’s Hockey team lost 4-2 to Germany after leading 2-1 early in the second half and will now go on to the Bronze medal match tomorrow.

Alana Nicholls came 16th at the end of the final races of the K1 500m. She will race today in the K1 200m.

Janine Murray debuted in her first Olympics in her first day of competition coming 21st in the hoop and 24th in the ball. She will compete today in the ribbon and clubs.

Other athletes that are back to compete today will be Steve Hooker in the pole vault finals, Reynolds in the BMX semi-finals and our sailing due in on their final day of the 470 sailing race.

Also, making their Olympic debut, Jesse Phillips and Steve Bird will be racing in the heats and semi-finals of the K2 200m. These two have been a duo team for a long time and have worked particularly hard to get to London. It’s been a challenging and rewarding journey, so keep your eyes out for them today. Good Luck Boys!
