Western Australian archer Alice Ingley has exited competition at the round of 16 elimination stage but not before securing an emphatic victory over highly rated Italian contestant Lucilla Boari, in the round of 32.

Making her Olympic debut in Rio, Ingley qualified in 58thposition in the women’s individual tournament, after the ranking round was contested ahead of the opening ceremony. The Brisbane based West Aussie had been struck down by a virus in the 48 hours leading into competition, which had threaten to thwart her campaign.

Her qualification saw her line-up against seventh ranked Italian, Lucilla Boari, but match-play is an altogether different beast from qualifying and Ingley brought some of her finest form to secure an impressive 7-1 win to progress to the round of 16.

After splitting the first set 1-1, Ingley took hold of the tie in the second, shooting a score of 28 to Boari’s 25 to gain a 3-1 lead, before sneaking further clear – with a 23 to 22 third set which put her in firm ascendency.

With her opponent wavering, Ingley wrapped up victory in the fourth set, shooting 24 points to the Italian’s 20 to round out a 7-1 win.

The victory earned Ingley a round of 16 tie with Brazilian Ane Marcelle Dos Santos, who had defeated Japan’s Saori Nagamine 7-3 in the round of 32.

Dos Santos proved too strong for Ingley in their match-up however, with the home nation hero prevailing 6-0, winning each of the three sets by two clear points (25-23, 26-24, 26-24) over the Australian.

With Ingley eliminated, attention will now shifts to Taylor Worth – with the Team Recurve bronze medallist set to resume his individual competition after qualifying 14th in the ranking round.

Worth will face Egypt’s Ahmed El-Nemr in the round of 32 at 2:13am Wednesday morning Perth time.
