Kim Mickle extended her personal best to 64.12m

Western Australian Institute of Sport javelin thrower Kim Mickle has set a new personal best of 64.12m after competing in Germany less than a week after arriving in Europe.

Mickle overcame jetlag and any rustiness associated from not having thrown since the Doha Diamond League meet in May, to record a new personal best of 64.12m on her third throw.

Whilst the German warm-up throw was seen as little more than an opportunity to get some competition practise in as Mickle builds for London, the result has been a welcome boost ahead of a busy July program where the seven time national champion will compete across Europe.

The Australian Flame track and field team has based themselves in Germany before splitting for different meets around Europe, with the Olympics now just over a month away.

Mickle will continue training in Germany before taking on three scheduled competition meets in Belgium (July 7), France (July 10) and Switzerland (July 17).

Reigning Olympic men’s pole vault champion and WAIS scholarship holder Steve Hooker endured a frustrating campaign at the Buderus Rheinspringen street meet in Cologne, with poor weather hampering all competitors.

Hooker was only able to clear 5.00m, with no one jumping higher than 5.40m in wet conditions.
