WAIS canoeing athletes Robin Jeffery and Kynan Maley have earned selection into the Australian team for this year’s world cup and world championship competitions in Europe.

The WA pair excelled at the Australian Canoe Slalom Selection Trials at Brady’s Lake in Tasmania, with Jeffery winning the individual C1 title before teaming with Maley to take the C2 crown.

The result means the combination will get the opportunity to mix it with the powerhouse European competitors through a series of world cup meets before the big event for 2011, the Slalom World Championships in Bratislava, Slovakia in September.

With 2011 being the last year before the London Olymic Games, Jeffery and Maley can expect to compete against the very best in the world, with the Bratislava showpiece being the last opportunity to impress on the international scene before the all-important Olympic selection process in the first half of 2012.

In other events:

Jessica Fox (AIS/NSWIS) won both K1 and C1 events ahead of Sarah Grant (AIS/VIS) and Rosalyn Lawrence (AIS/NSWIS) respectively to head the selection rankings in each class.

Fox, Grant and Ros Lawrence will make up the Women’s kayak team with Leanne Guinea (AIS/VIS) joining Fox and Lawrence in the canoe event.

Will Forsythe (AIS/NSWIS) bounced back from Saturday’s second place to take his third win of the four race series in the men’s kayak event. He will be joined on the team by Lucien Delfour and Warwick Draper (AIS/VIS) who made a late charge to finish second.
