After stepping out on the world stage at last weeks Australian Youth Olympic Festival in Sydney, the WAIS junior gymnasts prepare for another international competition this weekend at Loftus Recreations center in Leederville.

Our young gymnasts took on powerhouse countries China, Great Britain and New Zealand at the AYOF, in which was their first experience in an international competition. China and Great Britain took over the podium but crucial experience was gained for our young athletes.

The WAIS girls now prepare to take on New Zealand and South Africa in the Dreamlight Perth International Challenge which will be held at Loftus Recreational Center in Leederville.

This event is a new addition to gymnastics WA and will include two days of competition. In addition to the four Juniors that competed in Sydney last week, four more WAIS junior athletes have been selected to participate in the challenge.

“The purpose of this meet is to expose these younger gymnasts to more international competitions,” said senior coach Nicolai Lapchin. “They are still very young and need to see what level they need to be up against to be successful on the world stage.”

The team competition will take place on Friday night at 6pm, and individual All-Around will be on Sunday afternoon.

WAIS senior athletes Lauren Mitchell, Olivia Vivian, Emily Little, Georgia Simpson and Nikki Chung will also be attending the event to promote gymnastics in WA.
