WAIS Commonwealth Games bound diver Maddison Keeney has warmed up for her Glasgow Games debut with a bronze medal in the women’s 3m synchro with Australian partner Anabelle Smith at a World Cup meet in China.
Reigning world champions Wu Minxia and Shi Tingmao of China underlined their class after winning in convincing fashion on the second day of the 19th FINA Diving World Cup in Shanghai.
Despite a minor flaw in the fourth round in their Reverse 2.5 somersaults (305B), Wu and Shi never looked back from the get-go, sealing their victory with a total score of 340.50. Jenifer Abel and Pamela Ware of Canada took the silver, earning an overall 318.33 while the Australians claimed bronze with 310.14.
Mexican hopefuls Paola Espinosa and Dolores Hernandez finished at the podium’s door, totalling 305.40 points.
For Keeney, the result will no doubt buoy her Commonwealth Games medal hopes, particularly considering the Aussie duo finished so close to a silver medal outfit from Canada they will comete against again, later this month.
Keeney is also highly rated in the women’s 1m and 3m springboard, with the now Queensland based diver set to contest all three events in Glasgow later this month.
