A strong start to the 2017 Oceania Cup from the Kookaburras saw them come away with a 30-0 win over Papua New Guinea last night in Sydney.

Western Australian, Trent Mitton kick-started the Australian campaign scoring a quick hat-trick in the first quarter, helping his team to an eight-goal lead at the first break.

As their dominance continued, Australia forged on to double their score, entering the main break 16-0 up.

Prior to the final whistle, Mitton managed to score twice more to finish with five for the match, with fellow West Aussie Tom Wickham matching Mitton’s output with five of his own.

Australia now turn their attention to tonight’s match against the New Zealand  Black Sticks, scheduled to take place at 5:00pm (AWST).

Kookaburra Blake Govers said “they’re going to be very tough. It’s always a battle.”

“I’m not sure how it’ll be in the final leading into Sydney. We’ve just got to stick to our game plan tomorrow.”

Following yesterday’s convincing win over Papua New Guinea it looks likely that it will be trans-Tasman clash in the final of the 2017 Oceania Cup on Sunday.
