The Kookaburras

The Kookaburras have this week been drawn in the same pool as tournament host, India, for the Hero Honda FIH World Cup.

The tournament – held every four years – will take place in New Delhi, India, from February 28 – March 13, 2010.

Also amongst the Australian pool is Spain (world number 3) and England (world number 6), both of whom the Kookaburras successfully defeated in winning the recent ABN AMRO Hockey Champions Trophy in Melbourne.

Pakistan and South Africa have also been placed in pool B.

Following the pool phase of the Hero Honda FIH World Cup, the two best ranked teams of each pool will proceed to the semi finals.

After claiming their 10th Champions Trophy title only a few short weeks ago, the Kookaburras will enter the tournament as one of the favourites. Given that they are only 95 points behind Germany in the world rankings, a successful campaign by the Kookaburras could see them reclaim their place as the number one ranked team in the world.

The match schedule for the Hero Honda FIH World Cup will be released before the end of December 2009.
