Kookaburras Make Statement with Belgium Win

The Kookaburras have made a statement after defeating world number one Belgium 2-0 on their own turf overnight in their Pro League clash in Antwerp.

Already assured of a finals berth and sitting atop of the Pro League standings, the Kookaburras cemented top seeding with a hard fought win against a quality opponent, which was further complicated by a mid-match pause due to a torrential down-pour.

Blake Govers was the hero for the green and gold, converting two goals whilst Australia’s defensive rear-guard held firm to shutout the Belgians.

Govers opened scoring in the 19th minute but the match was not secured until the 60th minute, with both teams’ goal keepers having a big say in the low score.

Australia will complete the home and away phase on Saturday with a match against the Netherlands in Amsterdam.

Meanwhile, the Hockeyroos’ unbeaten stretch overseas has come to an end after they suffered a single goal defeat (1-0) at the hands of Belgium.

A 54th minute strike was enough to seal a tight contest between the two nations, although Australia had already banked a top four spot via last weekend’s victory over Germany.

The Hockeyroos will play their last match ahead of the finals against the Netherlands on Sunday. Australia maintains third ranking in the 2019 Pro League standings.
