Kiel Brown featured in Australia's 10-0 victory over South Africa

The Australian men’s hockey team have sent an ominous signal to the rest of the Olympic competition with an astounding 10-0 drubbing of South Africa this morning.

After opening their Olympic campaign on Monday with a 6-1 win over Canada the Kookaburras were once again in the mood for scoring goals, scoring five in each half to totally outclass their opponents.

West Australians Bevan George, Kiel Brown and Fergus Kavanagh all took part in the one-sided contest. George recovered from the minor injuries he suffered in Monday’s match to again take the Captain’s armband, while Kavanagh again got his name on the scoresheet with a 47th minute field goal.

Australia got off to a flyer with their first goal coming in just the second minute thanks to Jamie Dwyer. Although Eli Matheson doubled the lead in the 14th minute a goal fest didn’t look on the cards.

The South Africans held firm for the next 13 minutes of the contest before a flurry of Australian activity in the attacking circle saw three goals scored in the final eight minutes of the half.

With the scoreboard reading 5-0 at half time Australia didn’t take their foot off the pedal once the match re-commenced.

Another three goals inside the first 12 minutes of the second half, including Kavanagh’s clever flick, saw the scoreline read 8-0. The Kookaburras closed out the match with another two late goals to finish with a 10-0 victory.

Australia’s next match is against Pakistan on Friday night.
