Western Australian Olympic gymnast Lauren Mitchell has been awarded an OAM as part of the Queen’s Birthday Honours list.

Mitchell is regarded as Australia’s greatest gymnast and the first and only Australian woman to win a world title in gymnastics, a feat she achieved at the 2010 World Championships on the floor. Her world championship gold came a year after she won two silver medals.

2010 was the highlight of her career in which she also claimed four Commonwealth Games gold medals in Delhi. A dual Olympian Mitchell made her debut on the world’s biggest stage at the 2008 Beijing Games before competing at a second four years later in London.

Mitchell status as a gymnastics great was confirmed with the naming of a skill after her. Also known as the triple wolf turn, which was added to the Code of Points following the 2010 World Championships.
