Spotlight: Emily Little performed well at the Pacific Rim Championships

Western Australian Institute of Sport gymnast Emily Little has won a silver medal in the vault apparatus final at the weekend’s Pacific Rim Championships in Melbourne.

Competing in the Championships for the first time – Australia fielded a young and inexperienced team, but Little produced a strong performance to claim silver in her favoured vault competition with a score of 13.737points.

Australian team coach Peggy Liddick was naturally encouraged by Little’s success and hoped the performance would garner confidence for the 16 year-old going forward to Commonwealth Games selections.

“We knew Emily Little was capable of winning a medal on vault,” said Liddick. “On the other apparatus she doesn’t have difficulty score but I wanted her to be in the final to prove to herself that she can hit all events and be a solid all-arounder.”

Liddick said of the Australian squad “They’re all improving and their scores are improving, it’s all part of the process. The girls already have their assignments over the next month before trials in July. I only wish some of these juniors were old enough for Commonwealth Games.”

The Commonwealth Games selection trials for the Australian women will be held in conjunction with the national championships, commencing on July 4 in Perth.
