A talented squad of emerging WA road cyclists produced some encouraging results at last weekend’s Tour de Perth.

The tour, which forms part of Cycling Australia’s National Road Series (NRS) featured an opening prologue, two stages and closing criterium, scattered across iconic Perth landmarks.

WAIS athlete Darcy Pirotta – riding for Navitas Satalyst Racing Team – earned a seventh place finish in the prologue, clocking 1:26.68mins across the 1.5km course at a 49.8km average.

Fellow WAIS scholarship holder Sam Welsford was 13thin the prologue and earned a 16th place finish in the closing criterium also riding for Navitas Satalyst Racing Team.

WAIS athletes Reece Tucknott, Michael Storer and Jai Hindley raced for Otoc Vault Team and assisted GC rider Guy Kalma to a Tour victory.

WAIS Head Cycling coach Clay Worthington said the WA athletes had performed well well against a high calibre field and could take experience into the next round.

“There was some good learning and good physical development in the experience. Many will be racing April 9-12 in the Adelaide Tour against a similar elite national field,” he said.
