Medal Success for Mitchell at Zibo World Cup

Published On: 18 April 2012

WAIS-AIS gymnast Lauren Mitchell has won two international medals at the 2012 Zibo World Cup in China as she continues her preparation towards the Australian Championships and Olympic Selection Trials.

Mitchell competed at the invitation only event earlier this month, winning gold on Floor and bronze on Beam.

Her results come off the back of two week training camp at the AIS, and add to the bronze medal won by Mitchell’s Australian teammate Larrisa Miller on the Uneven Bars, painting a positive picture for the national team ahead of this year’s Olympic Games in London.

The reigning WAIS Athlete of the Year produced a solid display on Beam, returning 14.625 points to net bronze behind the host nation’s Yao Jinnan (15.175) and countrywomen Huang Qiushuang (14.775).

It was again on Floor that Mitchell showed her world champion pedigree, impressing the judges with a wel worked routine, earning a score of 14.400 for the gold medal ahead of Canada’s Victoria Moors (14.025) and Qiushuang (13.775).

WAIS athlete Nikki Chung will fly the Australian flag at the up-coming World Cup event in Croatia, where she will compete in the all-around competition, as she continues to build experience on the world stage, having marked her senior national debut late last year.
