Cam Meyer has the cycling world at his feet

AIS-WAIS cyclist Cam Meyer has continued his road apprenticeship in the Giro d’Italia, riding a 46th place finish in his role with team Garmin-Slipstream in stage nine of the grand tour.

Riding in his first major European road tour, Meyer has been entrusted with doing the hard yards for his more experienced teammates, and fighting for sprint teammates positions.

Meyer is tipped as a future Tour de France competitor and currently sits 131st in the general classification. He is expected to be pulled from the competition after stage 12, with team Garmin-Slipstream keen to avoid burn out for the 21 year-old in one of the most physically demanding tours on the international circuit.

The experience gained by Meyer from riding shoulder to shoulder with the world’s best cyclists – including legendary Texan Lance Armstrong – is anticipated to be a major learning curve for Meyer, who at such a tender age has already represented his country at Olympic level and claimed a world championship in the points race on the track.

Italian Danilo De Luca currently holds the leaders pink jersey by 13 seconds over Swede Thomas Lovkvist.

AIS-WAIS cyclist Travis Meyer has finished sixth in the opening stage of the Tour of Japan riding as part of the Team AIS.

Meyer will start stage two 20 seconds behind leader Leigh Howard of Victoria (Team AIS) and will be looking to emulate his older brother Cameron Meyer, who won the Tour of Japan in 2008.

The second stage is a 121km race on a 10km Todaiji Temple Daibutsuden – Nunome Dam circuit.
