WAIS gymnast Lauren Mitchell has underlined her status as one of Australian gymnastics’ elite after earning top qualification scores on beam and floor at the 2014 Australian Gymnastics Championships in Melbourne.

Having recently earned fourth place finishes at two world cup meets on her return from a shoulder injury, Mitchell demonstrated her craft and skill are as strong as ever, topping the charts in both the beam (14.900) and floor (14.250) rounds of qualification.

Mitchell’s efforts – coupled with a 13.300 on vault – has put her in strong position to push for Commonwealth Games selection, after she starred with four gold medals in Delhi (2010).

Joining Mitchell in competition in Melbourne was 2008 Olympian and fellow WAIS athlete Olivia Vivian who completed an excellent un-even bars routine to capture the second highest score of 14.350 behind Victorian Larrissa Miller (15.100).

Vivian also scored 12.950 on beam and 12.200 on floor in a solid display.

The women’s artistic senior apparatus finals are held across Saturday and Sunday, with the men’s and women’s artistic squads for Commonwealth Games to be announced on Sunday evening.
