Mitchell Takes Eighth in All Around Final

WAIS-AIS gymnast Lauren Mitchell has finished eighth in the final of the women’s all around at the 2011 Gymnastics World Championships in Tokyo.

Competing in a field of 24, Mitchell earned 56.699 points, including a stunning floor routine that gained 15.033 points in a top ranking apparatus display. Mitchell also shone in the vault rotation, after adding difficulty to the apparatus in 2011, she produced a fine execution to record 14.600.

Despite Mitchell missing out on qualification for the floor apparatus final on Friday, the 2010 reigning champion showed with this performance that she still leads the world in the discipline.

Fellow WAIS-AIS gymnast Emily Little finished 23rd in her first ever world championship all around final, with her top performance coming on vault, where she returned 13.633. Little scored 53.599 overall and will return home with a tremendous amount of competition experience.

USA continued its outstanding 2011 campaign, with Jordyn Wieber claiming the gold medal and all around title with a total score of 59.382. Wieber’s vault score of 15.716 was the highlight of her rotations and arguably of the entire final.

Victoria Komova of Russia claimed silver with a total score of 59.349, whilst bronze went to Jinnan Yao of China, who recorded a combined total of 58.598.

The women’s Artistic Gymnastics World Championships events will conclude on Friday with the hosting of the individual apparatus finals.
