WAIS individual scholarship holder Jessica Moore has secured a berth in the second round of the US Open at Flushing Meadows.
Moore claimed victory in straight sets over fellow wild card holder Melanie Oudin of the US, 7-6 7-6.
Whilst Moore prevailed through two tie breaks, fellow WAIS individual scholarship holder Casey Dellacqua bowed out to Julie Coin in straight sets after losing two tie breaks.
Moore ‘s success was only her second ever win in a Grand Slam tournament after she reached the second round of this year’s Australian Open. The 18 year old will now face German qualifier Anna-Lena Gronefeld in the second round hoping to reach the third round of a major for the first time.
“I knew when I saw the draw it was a good opportunity (against Oudin) and I thought I did pretty well today,” Moore said.
“I was pretty pumped about playing because I knew my opponent Melanie … we both played in the juniors together.
