Western Australian Institute of Sport swimmer Travis Nederpeldt posted a personal best in his heat of the 400m individual medley but it wasn’t enough to secure him a berth in the final.

In day one action at the Water Cube in Beijing the 23-year old finished in fifth place in his heat with a time of 4:15.37. Superstar American Michael Phelps won the heat and qualified fastest for Sunday’s final in a time of 4:07.82.

Nederpeldt, who finished 8th in the final in the same event on his Olympic debut in Athens four years ago, will now turn his attention to his second event, the 200m butterfly with his heat swim taking place on Monday morning.
