Janine Murray has retired from gymnastics but new exciting challenges await

Champion Australian rhythmic gymnast Janine Murray has called time on her glittering career this week, to focus on her academic pursuits.

The Zimbabwean born WAIS scholarship holder fulfilled a life-long dream this year, when she represented her adopted country at the 2012 London Olympic Games.

As a current national champion, and gold medallist from the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games, Murray has closed her stellar gymnastics career and opted at 22 years of age to pursue a new challenge by studying a Masters of Physiotherapy at Curtin University from 2013.

The Claremont resident graduated from UWA this year with a degree in Exercise and Health Science after returning home from a brilliant performance at the London Olympic Games.

It is this love of high performance sport that has sparked her new interest, and is one that Murray hopes will keep her involved for years to come.

“Although my time as an athlete has come to an end, I am looking forward to my future endeavours and hope these will allow me to continue to be involved in sport at a high performance level,” she said.

“Gymnastics has given me the opportunity to not only represent Australia at some of the greatest sporting events but also supporting me in becoming the best possible athlete I could be.”

“As an individual scholarship holder with the Western Australian Institute of Sport since 2006, it has been a huge privilege to be a member of several gymnastics teams and I will walk away with some fantastic achievements and memories to match,” she said.
