WAIS diver Josh Ong has gained selection onto the Australian team for this year’s Junior World Championships after an impressive performance at last weekend’s Elite Junior Championships in Sydney.

Ong claimed victory in the Boy’s 1m springboard and second place in the Boy’s 3m springboard to ensure he would travel with the Australian team for this year’s World Juniors in Russia in September.

The talented Banksia Grove athlete produced a solid series of dives to open a commanding lead over his fellow competitors that allowed him take first place, despite recording a blemished final dive.

Ong’s total of 477.00 earned him gold ahead of Victorian Joshua Kehagias (459.95).

The 16 year-old missed out on a second gold by a mere .05 in the 3m springboard, with Kehagias turning the tables to post a score of 514.75 to trump Ong’s 514.70 in the final round, after Ong had led the competition through to the last dive.

Ong earlier in 2014, travelled to Dresden for a competition, supported through a scholarship he was awarded through Western Australia’s Carbine Club.

There was also a highlight for the WAIS program in the Girl’s Platform, with WAIS diver Teju Williamson earning selection onto the Australian National Junior squad following a second place finish in competition.

Williamson scored 361.05 for the silver medal after pushing eventual gold medallist Anna Rose Keating (365.70) all the way to the end. A stunning final dive from Williamson wasn’t quite enough to pinch first place, but was more than sufficient to impress national selectors.
