Lauren Reynolds became the first Australian to achieve a podium finish in the 2017 UCI BMX Supercross World Cup series after finishing third in the second round event in Papendal.

After narrowly missing out on a finals position in the opening round on Saturday, the West Australian came out firing in round two to finish behind local champion Laura Smulders and dual Olympic gold medallist, Columbian Mariana Pajon.

Finishing the race in 38.960 seconds, Reynolds crossed the line a mere 0.8 seconds behind the gold medal winner.

The podium finish now moves Reynolds into sixth position in the overall World Cup standings.

After missing the final at the Rio Olympics last year as a result of crashing out in the semi-finals, Reynolds will be looking to reestablish herself as one of the leading contenders internationally throughout the remainder of the World Cup series.

Also competing in the Women’s Elite competition was fellow Australian Leanna Curtis, who currently sits in 31st position overall.

In the men’s event, Rio Olympian Bodi Turner was Australia’s best performer finishing in tenth place in the second round.

Rounds three and four of the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup will take place in Zolder, Belgium on May 13 and 14.
