WAIS BMX athlete Lauren Reynolds took to the track in her first international competition of the year in the Super-cross World Cup 1 in Copenhagen Denmark over the weekend.
Australind product Reynolds unfortunately experienced a terrible start with a devastating crash on Thursday during training for the event. She badly injured her thumb, shoulder and neck and shattered her bike during the accident, with Reynolds automatically assuming she would be out of action and not able to compete in the competition.
“I must say it’s one of the biggest crashes (I’ve had) so far,” said Reynolds after the event.
The young gun demonstrated her courage and persistence by still competing in the trials despite a severely injured thumb and managing to complete the trials with a solid tenth place.
Reynolds luckily gained additional confidence in time for her Saturday competition, which consisted of three rounds. To qualify for the final on Sunday, she had to achieve a top four ranking and did so, claiming a sixth place in the first semi-final after a difficult start before placing third in the second and third semi-finals.
“I got a really good start and held on tight to finish third and beat the two girls I needed to beat,” she said following the third race..
Heading into the final of the World Cup with her injuries still throbbing from her shocking Thursday crash, she managed to remain determined and audacious, accomplishing an admirable sixth place.
Reynolds was the only junior and the only Australian to make it through to the final at the event.
