#Rio2016 | Reynolds Earns Second Olympic Campaign
Western Australian BMX athlete Lauren Reynolds has been named in Australia’s five-strong BMX squad set to compete at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
Reynolds is one of three riders set to make history for Australia in Rio, as the first dual Olympians in the sport, with Caroline Buchanan and Sam Willoughby also preparing for second Olympic campaigns.
Born and bred in Bunbury, Reynolds won a World Championship silver medal in 2013 and was a member of the Australian World Championships team that competed recently in Colombia, in the final major event ahead of August’s Olympic Games.
BMX will be contested at Olympic level for just the third time in Rio, after the sport first appeared in Beijing 2008, with Australia boasting a single medal to date, which was won by Willoughby four years ago in London.
The BMX competition in Rio, opens with the men’s and women’s seeding run on Day 12. The men’s quarter-finals run on Day 13 with the semi-finals and medal races on Day 14 for men and women.
Reynolds’ selection, adds to the earlier announcement of the Australian track cycling team, which saw WA athletes Melissa Hoskins and Sam Welsford earn selection.
WA now has 25 officially selected athletes, with final Australian Olympic Team selections expected over the next two weeks.
