#Rio2016 | WA Diver Maddison Keeney Selected for Olympic Debut
Western Australian diver Maddison Keeney has today been officially selected on the Australian Diving Team for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
Keeney will contest both the 3m springboard and 3m synchro for Australia, when she makes her debut at Olympic level as part of nine-strong diving squad.
The Perth raised athlete, who relocated to train at the National High Performance Centre in Brisbane, was one of the stars of the 2016 Australian Diving Championships in Melbourne last May, winning national titles in both 3m disciplines.
The 20 year-old will partner Victorian Anabelle Smith in the 3m synchro, but it’s the individual 3m where Keeney has been particularly impressive in 2016.
Keeney produced top six finishes at World Cup Series meets in; Kazan, Windsor, Dubai and Beijing – with her efforts in Russia, seeing her win a bronze medal against a quality international field.
In 2014 Keeney represented Australia at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, winning two medals, whilst she was also a member of Australia’s FINA World Championships team in Russia, in 2015.
The former WAIS athlete’s official selection bolsters Western Australia’s total numbers on the Australian Olympic Team to 14, with that number expected to more than double before the final Olympic selection dates are reached in mid-July.
