WAIS track cycling graduates Sam Welsford and Matt Richardson have been selected in the Australian Olympic Team for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

24-year-old Welsford will compete at his second Olympic Games, having made his debut four years ago in Rio driving the Australian Team to silver in the team pursuit.

Welsford has been a stalwart of the Australian men’s team pursuit line-up the last five years winning three world titles, Commonwealth Games gold and part of the first team to set a sub 3:50 4km pursuit.

Tokyo will be an Olympic debut for Richardson, who graduated to the Cycling Australian National Training Centre in Adelaide in early 2018.

It has been a fast two years to the top of the world for the Warwick born Richardson, who only made his elite World Championship debut in 2018. In February he raced his second world championships where he helped Australia to a bronze medal in the team sprint, their first since 2020 in a sign of their significant improvement the last 12 months.

The remainder of the cycling team across, road, mountain bike and BMX will be selected in the coming months.
