The Australian men’s 4x400m relay team failed to match the miracle of Athens four years ago, after finishing sixth in the final at the Beijing Olympics.

Australia, silver medal winners in Athens four years ago, were at the back of the pack for the first three laps before Joel Milburn produced Australia’s best leg to move the team two places on the final lap.

The powerhouse United States team featuring the gold, silver and bronze 400m individual medallists, won in an Olympic record time of 2:55.39.

Bahamas claimed the silver and Russia the bronze.

Australia’s team was made up of Sean Wroe, West Australian John Steffensen, Clinton Hill and Milburn.
