Sullivan: Finished sixth

West Australian swimmer Eamon Sullivan has finished sixth in the final of the 50m freestyle at the Water Cube on Saturday morning.

The current world record holder swam the splash and dash in 21.65 seconds to finish behind the top three of Brazilian Cesar Cielo Filho, who broke the Olympic record and was just 0.02 seconds shy of Sullivan’s world record with a time of 21.30 seconds, and Frenchmen Amaury Leveaux and Alain Bernard.

Fellow Australian Ashley Callus finished just outside the medals, with his personal best time of 21.62 seconds earning him fourth place.

Sullivan, who has already won a silver and a bronze medal in the pool this week, was thrown early in the race when his goggles filled with water following his start.

“I was swimming with a little bit of blurred vision and that freaked me out a little bit,”the 22-year old said after the race but with his typical good sportsmanship he didn’t use it as an excuse.

“I rushed my race but that is no excuse. I still gave 100 per cent and wasn’t good enough.”

Sullivan will complete his 2008 Olympic campaign when he anchors Australia’s 4x100m medley relay team on Sunday morning.
