Focused: Sullivan is aiming for gold

West Australian world record holder Eamon Sullivan has qualified through to the semi finals of the 50m freestyle after recording the eighth fastest time in last night’s heats.

Sullivan will embark on his third attempt for a medal after claiming silver in the final of 100m freestyle yesterday, to add to his bronze in the men’s 4x100m earlier in the program.

Sullivan will hope to complete his medal collection with a gold in the 50m freestyle and cap a successful Olympic campaign. His heat time of 21.79sec was a comparative cruise to what is expected in today’s semi finals.

“No, you can’t hold back in the semis, especially in the 50m,” Sullivan said after his heat.

“There is going to be 0.10sec between probably the top eight. It’s going to be ridiculously fast.

“As we saw tonight there were two Olympic records already and a lot of people under 22sec, so there’s not going to be any chance to hold back at all.”

With his world record in threat and after a tumultuous day at the pool, Sullivan admitted to being mentally and physically drained.

“You usually get a sleep to recharge and to erase you memory and focus on a new day,” Sullivan said.

“Today it was lunch time, an hour’s rest and back here. It’s a very quick turn-around to change events, especially from 100m to 50m.

“I felt a bit flat tonight. Hopefully with a good sleep and quick dinner I’ll be fine tomorrow. I think I coped well and got through the heats pretty well and I have got a lot more in store.”
