Taylor Worth Through to Quarter Finals of Recurve

Giant-killing WAIS archer Taylor Worth trounced world No.1 Brady Ellison in the second round of match play to move right into medal contention at the London Olympics.

Worth coped superbly in flukey winds at Lord’s, thrashing Ellison 7-1 after starting the day with a one-arrow shootout victory over local hope Alan Wills.

The 21-year-old from Perth has now won his last three encounters with Ellison, a key member of the US squad which shocked red-hot favourites South Korea in the semis of the team event on Saturday before falling to Italy in the gold-medal match.

But Ellison was never in the hunt against Worth on Wednesday, dropping the last three sets to lose 29-29 27-25 29-26 27-26.

“It’s obviously a confidence-boosting win,” said Worth.

“Brady is the No.1 in the world, a fantastic competitor and a great athlete.”

“It’s a privilege to go up against him.”

“He just brings out the best in me.”

“I know I have to bring my best to even come close and I did that today.”

As a cricket fan, Worth took added pleasure from beating Englishman Wills on the hallowed turf at Lord’s.

That win came two days after British No.1 Larry Godfrey also cruised into the last 16.

“It’s a privilege to be here,” said Worth, who shot a perfect 10 in the one-arrow shoot-off to down Wills.

“Not many people get to even walk on the grass.

“Larry Godfrey opened the batting but I just bowled Wills out.”

The remaining four rounds of the men’s individual competition take place on Friday, with Worth to square off against Dai Xiaoxiang on China in the round of 16.

“If I can continue my form from today I’m pretty sure I can all the way,” said Worth.

Australia’s only other London Olympics archer Elisa Barnard was knocked out in the first round of the women’s match play on Monday.
