Behind every elite West Australian athlete is a team the public rarely sees. The world sees the moment – the finish, the score, the selection, the medal. But world class is built over years by athletes, coaches, families, clubs, communities and support teams working together.

Behind WA’s 30 Commonwealth Games athletes is a team of more than 50 high-performance specialists across coaching, sports science, sports medicine and athlete wellbeing, including:

  • 17 Sport Coaches
  • 7 Strength and Conditioning Coaches
  • 5 Performance Scientists
  • 3 Performance Psychologists
  • 5 Athlete Wellbeing and Engagement Advisers
  • 6 Physiotherapists
  • 5 Dietitians
  • 3 Data Analysts

To recognise their contribution, WAIS has launched The Work Behind World Class, a campaign that highlights the expertise, commitment and collaboration required to support elite performance.

WAIS CEO Matt Fulton said the public often sees only the final result, not the years of work that make it possible.

“Elite sporting performances don’t happen by chance. They are the result of years of investment in talented athletes and the coaches, scientists, medical practitioners and wellbeing experts who support them every day.”

“Every Western Australian athlete performing on the world stage helps inspire the community, creating childhood heroes and contributing to an active, healthy and cohesive Western Australia.”

The campaign features a 60-second hero film and a series of stories showcasing the people and professions that help Western Australian athletes pursue excellence on the international stage.

As Australia prepares for a home Olympic and Paralympic Games in Brisbane 2032, high-performance sport is becoming increasingly competitive and costly. The campaign highlights the importance of Western Australia’s ongoing investment in high-performance sport and the specialist workforce that supports athletes to compete with the world’s best.

At WAIS, we bring that support together with world class coaching, care, science, wellbeing and performance expertise. Because when Western Australian athletes are supported to become their best, they inspire the best in all of us.
