WA swimmer Brianna Throssell has set the 10th fastest time in the women’s 200m butterfly heats on Day 4 to progress to the semi finals at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

Throssell swam 2:07.76 for the third fastest time in her heat to safely progress to the semi final stage of the four lap event, which will be contested in Day 4’s evening session (Wednesday morning Perth time).

On her Olympic debut, Throssell swam in the third heat, making a solid start before stepping up her pace over the closing 50m to touch home third and ensure her name would be included in the list of 16 athletes through to semi finals.

The fastest qualifier was Spain’s Mireia Belmonte Garcia (2:06.64) ahead of the American pairing of Natalie Adams and Hali Flickinger who both clocked 2:06.67.

Hungarian swim star Katinka Hosszu was expected to compete in Throssell’s heat but was a late scratching, following a busy schedule that has already seen her win dual gold in Rio.

Throssell will be back in action from 9:37am, looking to make the top eight and earn a debut Olympic final berth.
