WAIS cyclist Cameron Meyer has finished eighth in the closing stage time trial of the Tour de Suisse to reinforce his Tour de France credentials.

The 2015 Jayco Herald Sun Tour champion is part of a stable of cyclists on the GreenEDGE roster in contention for this year’s Tour, but his form in the race of truth will have given the team hierarchy plenty to think about before finalising their roster for the event starting on July 4.

Tom Dumoulin (Giant – Alpecin) rode to the stage victory in a time of 48minutes 36seconds, whilst Simon Spilak (Team Katusha) finished second, 18 seconds in arrears, to claim the overall title. Meyer was one-minute seven-seconds behind the winning time for eighth.

GreenEDGE Sport Director Neil Stephens said Meyer’s time might’ve been even more impressive had he not been involved in a break away on the previous day.

“Cameron has been thinking about today’s stage right throughout the whole week,” Stephens said. “To a degree, doing a lot of work out in the break yesterday might have taken the edge off him but still, a top ten in the final time trial is a good result for Cam.”

Overall, GreenEDGE complete the nine-stage Tour de Suisse with a stage win courtesy of Michael Matthews on stage four and a top 15 overall (Esteban Chaves).

“A stage win and 14th place on the general classification, I think we can call that a successful week,” Stephens said.

“All of the prospective Tour de France riders went into the start of the Tour de Suisse going well and probably came out of it going even better so that all looks good for the final selection options.”

A multiple track world champion, Cameron Meyer contested the Tour de France for GreenEDGE in 2013, and rode the Giro d’Italia in 2014.
