Tucknott Competes at MTB World Championships in Cairns
Western Australian mountain bike athlete Reece Tucknott has finished 31st in the men’s U23 cross country event at the World Championships in Cairns.
Tucknott was the highest ranked of the eight competing Australians, clocking a time of 1:23.07hrs behind U23 world champion Samuel Gaze of New Zealand.
Cairns put on a tremendous show with warm, humid conditions and a fast, technical course pitting riders against one another and against their own limits.
With a field of 68 riders commencing, the pace was on early as Gaze and South African Alan Heatherly cleared from the field and launched a tense battle for gold.
The Kiwi held firm for victory by 11 seconds over Heatherly, with bronze taken out by German Maximilian Brandl.
At 21 years of age, Tucknott is one of the country’s most encouraging future prospects and the former track cycling talent is in strong contention to vie for a position on the Australian team at next year’s Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
