Two Years til Tokyo 2020

With today marking the two-year count down to the official opening of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games you can whet your appetite for the sporting extravaganza ahead with a look at the competition schedule for the 32nd Olympiad.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games will feature a record 33 sports and 339 events across 42 competition venues.

AOC Chef de Mission Ian Chesterman is forecasting an Australian representative team of 470 athletes for Tokyo.

Tokyo 2020 will include the addition of four new Olympic sports with; Karate, Skateboarding, Sports Climbing and Surfing all set to debut, whilst it will also mark the return of Softball and Baseball to the Olympic schedule for the first time since Beijing 2008.

  • The opening ceremony will be held on Friday, July 24 with the closing ceremony taking place on Sunday, August 9.
  • Swimming will again feature over the first half of the Olympic schedule, with Athletics highlighting across the second half.
  • Athletics will offer the most medal events in Tokyo with 48. Swimming follows with 35, whilst Boxing, Canoeing, Cycling, Gymnastics, Judo, Sailing, Shooting, Rowing, Weightlifting and Wrestling all boast double figures in terms of gold medal events.
  • Football and Softball will both commence matches before the official opening ceremony to accommodate the total number of matches required.
  • Road Cycling will feature before the Track Cycling program in Tokyo.
  • Archery, Cycling, Fencing, Judo, Shooting, Taekwondo and Weightlifting will all host medal events of the opening day of official competition (Saturday, July 25).
  • The men’s Water Polo gold medal match will be the final medal event of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
  • The final competition day will also host medal events in Athletics (marathon), Basketball, Boxing, Cycling, Gymnastics, Handball and Volleyball.
